The Baseball Drinking Game: Rules & How to Play

Share on:

Are you a baseball and beer enthusiast? Switch up your average game of Beer Pong with the baseball drinking game ‘Baseball Beer Pong’!

The game consists of two game elements. The first is the aiming and throwing of ping pong balls at each other’s base cups, like in Beer Pong. The second element is Flip Cup. It’s a really fun game, even if you’re not a big sports person.

The Baseball drinking game requires at least four players. To play it, you’ll need the same materials as for normal Beer Pong, so you can easily switch between both games for variety.

So, gather your friends and/or family, some crisp, cold ones, and let’s start playing!

Setting Up

To setup, you’ll need a rectangular table, preferably longer than 6 ft. as with Beer Pong. In addition, you’ll need at least 14 solo cups and 2-3 ping pong balls.

Here’s how set it all up:

  1. Place a row of four cups at both ends of the table, parallel to the long side of the table, in the middle. These cups are the bases.
  2. Fill the four cups with beer, with the home cup full, and then progressively less from 1-3.
  3. Place three cups at the other edges of the table, with ample space between them. This is because these cups will be used to play flip cup as part of battling for bases.
  4. Each team chooses a side to play on either of the tables’ long sides.

Baseball Drinking Game Rules

The objective of Beer Baseball is for teams to score as many runs as possible in nine ‘innings’. As in traditional baseball, teams alternate between batting and defense. One inning is completed when both teams have had a turn at bat.

The team at bat tries to hit the cups on the middle line. When a cup is hit, that cup plus those on the lower bases must be drunk. As soon as the team at bat accumulates three outs, it’s time to switch sides. After the other team also accumulates three outs, the inning is over, and the next one begins.

Determine the team that starts at bat by flipping a coin or playing rock, paper, scissors.

1. Batting

Players from the batting team take turns throwing the ball, attempting to land it in the opposing team’s base cups.

Each player gets three attempts before the next player takes over. Each missed throw counts as a strike.

If the shooter successfully lands the ball in a cup, the opposing team must drink from that cup and all the ones below it (the ones with lower numbers).

For example, if you land it in the second base cup, the opposing team must finish all the beer in both the 2nd base cup and the 1st base cup below it. Emptied cups should be refilled each time they are emptied, so there are no empty cups on the table!

The team at bat has three outs, with an out occurring in any of the following situations:

  • When the shooter accumulates 3 strikes; each missed throw counts as one strike.
  • If the defense catches a shot that bounces off a cup before it lands.
  • Losing at stealing (explained below).

2. Base Running

When the shooter scores a base, that player is on that base. This means standing at one of the cups on the long side of the table.

One player from the defending team stands behind the cup on the opposite side of the table to defend that base. You will score a point for your team by reaching the last home run base.

During your batting round, there are two ways to advance to higher bases:

  • When one of your teammates hits a base after your shooting turn. For instance, if your teammate hits the 2nd base cup, then that player goes to that base, while you can advance an equal number of bases. In this case, you would reach the home run base and score a point for your team.
  • The other way is by base stealing, as described below.

3. Base Stealing

A player from the team at bat can attempt to steal a base at any time, except when a cup is being refilled. You must be on a base, meaning you’ve scored in your batting round.

To steal a base, you’ll need to beat a defender from the opposing team at flip cup. Here’s how to steal a base:

  1. Chug one of the ‘base holder’ cups.
  2. The defender of that base does the same.
  3. After chugging, both players attempt to flip their cups.
  4. If the base stealer flips their cup first, they advance to the next base.
  5. If the catcher wins at flip cup, the base stealer is out.

Wrap Up

This baseball drinking game is the perfect combination of teamwork, drinking, and competition.

Aside from baseball beer pong, there are many other drinking games with cups that are also very fun to play. You could casually switch between different games, or even organize a small beer games competition to determine the overall winning team of various games.

I’d like to remind everyone to enjoy drinks responsibly and to be mindful of each other’s well-being. Remember, moderation is key for a healthier and more memorable experience. Also, let’s keep an eye on our friends and loved ones – a small act of care can make a big difference. Let’s ensure our gatherings are not just fun, but also safe and supportive for all.
